Solution Overview & Benefits
WeWater is a decentralized water distribution solution operated by WeTu, designed to provide affordable, reliable, and safe drinking water to peri-urban and rural communities in Kenya. The system uses locally managed kiosks that purify, store, and distribute water drawn from sources like boreholes and rainwater collection systems.
Users access water through digital payments or tokens, enabling transparency, convenience, and affordability. Water quality is routinely tested to meet WHO safety standards.
WeWater sells safe, clean, filtered drinking water that is not chemically treated. This water can be purchased any day of the year and at any time of day through a water ATM system that fully operates cashless with M-PESA payment.
Simple yet innovative and quality-oriented filtration technologies to provide safe drinking water.
History & Development
WeWater was developed by WeTu, a Kenyan social enterprise initiated with support from the Siemens Stiftung, as part of a broader goal to provide clean energy, water, and mobility services to underserved communities around Lake Victoria. The project is grounded in community-based engagement, sustainable technology use, and data-driven water safety monitoring.
