Managed by WeTu, with support from Siemens Stiftung, WeMobility offers sustainable transportation options like electric boda-bodas and cargo bikes in areas around Lake Victoria. These vehicles are rented via a network of 30+ solar charging hubs, using clean solar energy and battery-swapping. The service improves mobility for individuals and businesses, reduces fuel costs and emissions, supports local enterprise, and creates maintenance jobs through a hub-based model. The system is optimized for rural use and ensures vehicles are easy to maintain with community involvement.
History & Development
Launched in 2019 as part of WeTu’s three-pronged rural service model (WePower, WeWater, WeMobility), WeMobility uses locally assembled and imported electric two- and three-wheelers. Over time, WeTu has built over 30 solar-powered charging stations and rolled out 40+ electric motorcycles and cargo bikes across Western Kenya. The initiative supports Kenya’s efforts to reduce urban pollution while addressing rural mobility constraints.
