Solution Overview & Benefits

The Tunsai water filter, developed by Hydrologic in Cambodia, is a silver-enhanced ceramic water purifier designed for household use. It effectively removes at least 99.99% of bacteria from water, providing a safe and affordable alternative to boiling water for rural communities.

By providing an alternative to boiling water, the Tunsai filter reduces the need for burning wood or other fuels, thereby decreasing indoor air pollution and lowering household fuel expenses.

History & Development

The filter consists of a porous ceramic pot treated with silver nitrate, which fits into a plastic storage container equipped with a tap for dispensing clean water. The ceramic pot allows water to pass through its microscopic pores while blocking bacteria and other contaminants. The silver nitrate further enhances bacterial removal by killing any bacteria that may penetrate the ceramic.

These filters are widely used in Cambodia, with over 450,000 units sold, benefiting more than 2 million Cambodians by providing access to clean drinking water.
