Takavator is a small-scale, low-cost, portable equipment that converts waste biomass into solid fuel using a variety of thermochemical treatments, including one known as oxygen-lean torrefaction.
Takavator is a customizable thermochemical process that turns different types of crop and forest residues into higher-value bio products such as chemicals, biofuels, and biochar-based soil amendment products for agricultural applications. The proper management of non-merchantable residues also has benefits in stemming polluting open-air burning and reducing the risks of catastrophic wildfires.
History & Development
specializes in using biomass, or plant waste, to generate fertilizer and other helpful products in a way that small farmers can use. The co-founder, Kevin Kung's innovation is a method called oxygen-lean torrefaction, in which the biomass is treated to release low-energy molecules, which are captured and converted to solid fuel that machines can use. The resulting biomass is solid, carbon-rich, easy-to-transport fertilizer. Takachar has experienced a great deal of success—it received the in 2021 (the most prestigious global environment prize) funded by Prince William and Princess Kate.
They aim to decentralize bio-product production using a combination of easy-to-use hardware and IoT-based control systems. Their portable system can be carried from farm to farm to locally densify and upgrade small pockets of residues.
