History & Development
SurgiBox is an innovative portable operating room system that has been developed over more than a decade to provide safe, sterile surgical environments in challenging settings. The idea for SurgiBox originated in 2009 when Debbie Teodorescu was a student at Harvard University. Inspired by lab glove boxes, Teodorescu envisioned creating a "surgical glovebox" that could provide a sterile environment for surgery anywhere. Teodorescu began collaborating with MIT D-Lab around 2009 to develop the concept.
Over the next several years, the SurgiBox team worked with D-Lab faculty, staff and students to refine the design and tackle engineering and business challenges.
In 2022, SurgiBox donated dozens of its SurgiField systems to the Ukrainian military for battlefield use. The company is ramping up production ahead of obtaining its second EU medical device certification.
