History & Development
SpaceX initiated the Starlink project in 2015, with the goal of creating a global broadband network. The first operational satellites were launched in May 2019. As of September 2024, the constellation comprises over 7,000 satellites, with plans to deploy up to 12,000 to improve coverage and capacity. Starlink began offering services to paying customers in October 2020 and has since expanded to over 125 countries and territories.
