SMART Turbine
Smart Hydro Power

Solution Overview & Benefits
The Smart Hydro Power turbine was developed to produce a maximum amount of electrical power with the kinetic energy of flowing waters. Because it is powered by kinetic energy instead of potential energy, it is known as a so-called “zero-head” or “in-stream” turbine. As such, no dams and/or head differential are necessary for the operation of this device; the course of a river remains in its natural state and no high investments in infrastructure are required. Because the amount of kinetic energy (velocity) varies from river to river, a greater amount of energy is generated with a higher velocity of water flow.
This turbine is designed for rivers, featuring a reinforced debris protection and a patented anchoring system. The anchoring can be done at the bottom of the river, at a bridge support, or at a block on the side of a river.
- submerges to avoid debris when the water flow speed increases
- stainless steel cables are carefully designed such that debris neither accumulates nor damages the blades
This turbine is ready to overcome:
- variable water depth and velocity
- floating debris of various materials and sizes
History & Development
Smart Hydro Power GmbH (Ltd.) is a German private for-profit company founded in 2010 by Ines and Karl Kolmsee.
We are focused on developing and implementing affordable renewable energy projects that enhance productivity and improve people’s living standards. Smart Hydro Power started in 2010 as a group of kinetic turbine developers. The experience on installations and contact with the needs and challenges of remote or off-the-grid locations brought us to the current position of offering products and packages that follow principle of being simple, competitive, and complete. Nowadays, we run diverse decentralized electrification projects, offering a range of renewable energy solutions which are supported by an intelligent electrical management system.
We believe in sustainable development and empowering people to be able to define their own choices and to shape their own lives.
