Permafunnel (water saving device for hand pumps)
Permafunnel

Solution Overview & Benefits
Permafunnel reduces water waste, contamination and maintenance at hand pumps. When filling jerry cans, over one million litres of water can be wasted each year. Popular hand pumps waste more than 30% of the water pumped due to the chaotic flow as the water exits the spout of the hand pump. Permafunnel is inserted into the spout and provides an internal, unseen funnel that effectively calms the water flow.
Water waste is reduced to virtually nil; contamination is reduced due the now unnecessary improvised funnel; maintenance is reduced due to the reduced amount of pumping required to fill peoples jerry cans. Every India Mark hand pump should be fitted with the Permafunnel to better serve those who work so hard for their daily water requirements.
History & Development
The Permafunnel was invented in 2008 in West Darfur, Sudan by Rowan Matthews-Frederick whilst managing a large water program. Hand pumps were found to be unreliable and wasting a lot of water. After some experimenting to refine the design, 10 Permafunnels were tested successfully in Darfur. A further 200 Permafunnels were then installed in hand pumps in West Darfur.
In 2014-2016 it is hoped to carefully monitor the installation of a further 200 Permafunnels in the Gambia.
The Permafunnel is a finalist out of 800+ entries in the Siemens Stiftung "empowering people. Award". Permafunnel is a simple and proven concept. It is ready for large scale implementation and are available from Permafunnel Australia by contacting them direct via the website or email.
