Oonnati Irrigation-as-a-service
Oorja

Solution Overview & Benefits
Oonnati delivers solar-powered irrigation to smallholder farmers through a community-based, pay-per-use model. Oorja installs 3–5 HP solar submersible pumps that deliver up to 250 m³ of water per day, shared by 15–20 farmers. Water usage is metered and sold per cubic meter, offering users up to 20–50% cost savings compared to diesel pumps.
Benefits include:
- No upfront cost for farmers—pay only for the water they use
- Reliable, year-round irrigation supports multiple cropping seasons
- Clean energy reduces carbon emissions and pollution
- Local job creation: 1 pump supports ~3 jobs (operators, maintenance)
- Helps marginalized farmers boost productivity (15–30%) and income (up to 29%)
History & Development
Founded in 2017 by Amit Saraogi and Clementine Chambon, Oorja launched its first Oonnati solar pump in 2018. The model was recognized with awards such as the Cisco Global Problem Solver Grand Prize (2019) and the Keeling Curve Prize (2020). As of 2020, Oorja had installed 12 solar pumps serving 130+ farmers across Uttar Pradesh and Assam, with services expanding to agro-processing (“Oojjwal”) and cold storage (“Oonnayan”) .
