Maya Pedal Bicycle Machines
Asociación Maya Pedal

Solution Overview & Benefits
Bicimáquinas are pedal-powered machines that assist with a variety of jobs in the home, on the farm, on the road and in small businesses.
Each bicimáquina is handmade in Maya Pedal's workshop using a combination of old bikes, concrete, wood and metal.
So far, Maya Pedal has developed several original designs:
- Bicycle Mill/Corn Thresher
- Bicycle Blender
- Bicycle Rope Water Pump
- The Mobile Water Pump
- Bicycle Nut-Sheller
- Trikes & Trailers
- Microconcrete Vibrator for Roofing Tiles
- Bicycle Coffee De-Pulper
Pedal power can be harnessed for countless applications which would otherwise require electricity (which may not be available) or hand power (which requires far more effort).
Bicimáquinas can be built using locally-available materials and can be easily adapted to suit the needs of local people. They free the user from rising energy costs, can be used anywhere, are easy to maintain, produce no pollution and provide healthy exercise.
History & Development
Maya Pedal began in 1997, working with a group of Canadians from the organization PEDAL. Following a vision for sustainable development in Guatemala, Maya Pedal became constituted under local control as Asociación Maya Pedal in 2001.
Maya Pedal is a Guatemalan NGO based in San Andrés Itzapa. They accept bikes donated which they either recondition to sell, or use the components to build a range of "Bicimaquinas", (pedal powered machines).
