Kara Solar Boat
Fundación Kara Solar

Solution Overview & Benefits
Kara Solar develops solar-powered boats and charging infrastructure in collaboration with Indigenous communities across the Amazon. Designed as an alternative to gasoline-powered river transportation, the boats help communities travel between villages and access schools, healthcare, markets, and other essential services without relying on fossil fuels.
The initiative combines renewable energy technology with local training and community management to support long-term independence. Its main benefits include:
- Clean transportation: Reduces dependence on gasoline and diesel for river travel.
- Improved access: Supports transportation to schools, healthcare facilities, and markets.
- Rainforest conservation: Offers an alternative to road development, which can contribute to deforestation.
- Local technical capacity: Trains community technicians to operate, maintain, and repair solar transportation systems.
- Community autonomy: Promotes locally owned and managed transportation infrastructure.
Kara Solar's approach emphasizes technology that communities can maintain and manage independently.
History & Development
Kara Solar began developing solar-powered river transportation in collaboration with Achuar communities in Ecuador in 2012. Its first solar boat, Tapiatpia, entered service in 2016. Since then, the organization reports building 12 solar boats and charging stations across five countries, with local technicians responsible for maintenance.
Four boats and solar centers are currently operating in Pastaza, Ecuador, in Sharamentsa, Kapawi, Wayusentsa, and Wichimi. Kara Solar is also developing a durable, repairable 5 kW long-tail electric motor designed specifically for Amazonian conditions. According to the provider's October 2026 update, the motor is undergoing final technical validation in Achuar territory ahead of planned production.
