MaternaWall Tray
Maternova

Solution Overview & Benefits
Developed to provide a sustainable and accurate method for quantifying blood loss during and after childbirth, addressing the global challenge of PPH.
- Design: Features a molded plastic tray with two calibrated wells placed under the mother's buttocks immediately after delivery. The first well collects up to 500 mL of blood, and upon reaching capacity, overflows into the second well, allowing for a total measurement of up to 1000 mL.
- Calibration: Marked at 100 mL intervals, with clear indicators at 300, 500, and 800 mL, facilitating real-time monitoring.
- Reusability: Unlike single-use plastic drapes, the tray is designed for multiple uses after proper sterilization, making it cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
- Clinical Impact: By providing objective measurements, it reduces reliance on visual estimations, which are often inaccurate, thereby enabling timely interventions and improving maternal outcomes.
- User Feedback: Midwives and healthcare providers have reported ease of use, comfort for patients, and improved cleanliness in delivery areas.
History & Development
The MaternaWell Tray was developed by Dr. Justus Hofmeyr, a renowned obstetrician from South Africa, in response to the urgent global need for more accurate and affordable methods of measuring postpartum blood loss — one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide.
In many healthcare settings, especially those with limited resources, visual estimations of blood loss are often inaccurate, delaying life-saving interventions. Recognizing this challenge, Dr. Hofmeyr designed a simple, low-cost tray with calibrated wells to offer a reliable and reusable solution.
The tray was further developed and manufactured by Umoya, a South African medical device company, and brought to international markets through a partnership with Maternova, a U.S.-based organization focused on maternal and neonatal health innovations.
Tested in diverse clinical settings across South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania, the MaternaWell Tray has been widely praised for its practicality, ease of use, and potential to improve maternal outcomes. It is now recognized as a valuable tool in global strategies to reduce maternal deaths caused by postpartum hemorrhage.
