Jaipur Foot
BMVSS Jaipurfoot

Solution Overview & Benefits
The Jaipur Foot is a low cost prosthetic leg with lifelike performance. It uses many of the advanced joint designs found in other prosthetic limbs.
Like all lower limb prosthesis, the Jaipur Foot / Limb Technology has three vital components namely –
-
- Prosthetic Foot
- Knee Joint
- Socket & Shank
It retails for $80, in contrast to American-made prosthetics which can cost more than $10,000.
It is easy to adjust, waterproof and can be used either with or without shoes, important for cultural reasons such as entering temples.
The limb can be adjusted in the field, meaning only one trip is needed to measure the user and provide the prosthetic.
The Jaipur Foot is the only non-articulated foot in the world that provides mobility in all three planes i.e., Dorsi-flexion, Inversion / Eversion and transverse rotation
History & Development
The idea of BMVSS was born out of trauma on a hospital bed in Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Jodhpur.
D. R. Mehta, a civil servant, met with life-threatening accident near Pokhran, breaking his right femur. He was rushed to the Jodhpur Hospital, where doctors initially felt amputation necessary. However, they saved both his life and limb. But Mehta remained in hospitals, partly, in Jodhpur and later in SMS Medical College, Jaipur for five months in 1969. While lying on the hospital bed, his trauma made him resolve the setting up of an artificial limb center. For this, he got the inspiration from:
- Lord Mahaveer – a Jain Tirthankar, (contemporary of Lord Buddha) greatest apostle of Ahimsa, who enjoined that all should be helped to get happiness and to get over pain.
- Mahatma Gandhi – who daily sung a hymn – “a virtuous man is one who senses the pain of others”
- Dr. Albert Schweitzer – the great social activists, honored with Nobel prize, who said – “Join the fraternity of those who bear the mark of pain”
Dr. Gangaram Purohit and Dr. M. M. Bapna, who operated on Mehta, in Jodhpur also remined him to help the amputees get limbs by setting of a permanent limb making center.
However, normally it was not possible for a civil servant to set up a social organization. But, during the 2500th Nirwan (liberation) Year, of Lord Mahaveer, Mehta got the permission from Hardev Joshi, (himself a disabled) the Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 1975. Separately, advantage was taken of Jaipur Foot Technology already developed in SMS Medical College, Jaipur.
Finally, BMVSS was setup as a Society under Rajasthan Societies Registration Act (261/1974-75) March 29, 1975.
