Irrometer Low-Tension Soil Moisture Tensiometer
Irrometer Co.

Solution Overview & Benefits
The Irrometer tensiometer detects how tightly water is held in the soil by its roots—also known as soil water tension. It uses a simple water-filled tube with a ceramic tip buried in the root zone and a vacuum gauge for direct readings. As soil dries, it pulls water from the tensiometer, creating a vacuum proportional to soil moisture deficit. Farmers use this information to know exactly when and how much to water, preventing both over- and under-irrigation.
Key benefits:
- No batteries or electricity required
- Direct, accurate measure of plant-available moisture
- Prevents waste of water and fertilizer
- Supports yield improvement through better irrigation timing
- Suitable for a wide range of soils without calibration
- Durable for long-term field use
History & Development
Developed in the late 1970s, the Irrometer tensiometer became the industry standard for measuring soil water potential. Its rugged design and simplicity have made it a reliable tool for growers, conservationists, and extension workers worldwide.
