Earthen flooring replaces traditional dirt floors in homes with a safe, clean surface made from locally sourced clay and sand. Once laid and leveled, the surface is sealed using a custom-formulated, plant-based oil that makes it water-resistant, easy to clean, and long-lasting. This low-cost flooring technology significantly reduces health risks associated with dirt floors, such as respiratory infections, jigger infestations, and parasitic diseases, especially among children.

History & Development
This flooring method has been pioneered and scaled by organizations such as EarthEnable in Rwanda and Uganda. The concept builds on traditional earthen construction techniques, modernized with a safe, plant-based sealant that improves longevity and hygiene. EarthEnable has developed a replicable training and installation model that enables local masons to install floors cost-effectively, reaching over 20,000 families to date. The solution was developed through extensive community engagement, product testing, and adaptation to tropical climates.
