ColdHubs

Solution Overview & Benefits
ColdHubs is a Nigerian social enterprise offering solar-powered, off-grid cold storage rooms located at key market and farm aggregation points. These modular walk-in cold rooms allow smallholder farmers, retailers, and wholesalers to safely store perishable food, paying a small daily fee per crate stored. By maintaining a consistent 5 °C temperature, ColdHubs dramatically increases the shelf life of fruits, vegetables, and other perishables—from 2 days up to 21—allowing vendors to reduce spoilage and increase income.
Benefits:
- Reduces food spoilage by up to 80%
- Extends shelf life of perishables up to 21 days
- Increases farmer/vendor income (reported average: from $60 to $120/month)
- Off-grid, solar-powered technology with low environmental impact
- Affordable, daily rental system (e.g., 100 Naira per 20 kg crate)
- Empowers local women as hub operators and staff
- Creates jobs and delivers community training
History & Development
Founded in 2015 by entrepreneur Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu, ColdHubs was designed to address the massive post-harvest losses facing Nigerian farmers due to lack of access to cold storage. Developed with local engineers and piloted in rural Imo State, the system was refined through real-world feedback and scaled via the Cooling-as-a-Service (CaaS) model. It has since received global recognition, including support from the Food Planet Prize, Global LEAP, and Ashden Awards. As of 2025, ColdHubs operates over 50 hubs across 20+ Nigerian states, serving more than 11,000 users.
