Interlocking bricks
Build Up Nepal

Solution Overview & Benefits
Interlocking Bricks (CSEB) are eco-friendly, compressed earth blocks that fit together without the need for mortar, making construction faster, stronger, and more sustainable.
They are made by mixing and compressing Sand, Soil and Cement in a machine. It can also be made from stone-dust and cement. The bricks are then stacked and cured for 21 days – the cement sets and bonds with the sand stabilizing the brick.

Build up Nepal supports rural communities and entrepreneurs to build earthquake resistant at low cost. They specialize in innovative Compressed Stabilized Earth Brick (CSEB) technology, which they have improved on and adapted, to enable affordable, disaster-resilient construction at scale.
They support rural entrepreneurs to start micro-enterprises that build homes and create local jobs, helping to increase their communities’ resilience.

History & Development
In 2015 a devastating earthquake hit Nepal destroying more than 800,000 homes. Many rural families were hit hard and pushed deeper into debt and poverty. Build Up Nepal started as a small team working to help poor families rebuild their homes. They realized that the only way to rebuild on the scale needed in remote villages was to empower the locals to build by themselves using local materials. They interviewed several families, all of them were dreaming of living in a brick house. But no one could afford it.
They started Build up Nepal to help them fulfill that dream. Build up Nepal’s mission is to make bricks Eco-friendly and affordable. The Interlocking Earth Bricks are produced in the village using sand, soil and 10% cement enabling poor families to build disaster resistant homes at low cost.
