History & Development
Ari was developed by Munira Twahir and her team at Inteco Kenya to address the challenges of menstrual product accessibility and distribution in underserved regions. Recognizing issues such as supply shortages, lack of privacy, and inadequate data for program evaluation, they created a solution that combines technology with user-centric design.
The innovation leverages Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing technologies to monitor and manage pad distribution effectively. By providing real-time analytics, Ari enables organizations to make informed decisions, optimize resource allocation, and ensure that menstrual health programs are both effective and sustainable.
Through partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders, Ari has been implemented in various communities, enhancing menstrual health management and empowering women and girls with consistent access to necessary products.

Additional Information
- Video
- Oversaturation of sanitary pad programs in Kenya’s urban centers has resulted in inequitable distribution, as transportation costs increase with distance from major towns.
- The average provision is one packet of 5–10 pads per month, often insufficient. To address this, the pad ATM offers a cost-effective, automated solution suitable for remote areas where traditional programs are unsustainable. This self-service system dispenses single pads to enhance access and customization, ensuring more equitable distribution without adult interference or logistical challenges.
