The MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Circumference) tape bracelet is a simple, color-coded measuring tool used to quickly assess nutritional status, particularly in children aged 6 to 59 months.
The Mid-upper arm circumference tape has been updated according to UNICEF standards which put severe malnutrition at 11.5 cm and moderate malnutrition at 11.5 to 12.5 cm (less than 115 mm). According to UNICEF guidelines, children with a mid arm circumference of less than 11.5 cm have a higher risk of death.
This tri-color single slotted measuring MUAC tape is wrapped around the upper arm and threaded through the slot to determine the circumference of the pregnant women's upper arm. The mid upper arm circumference has been shown to correlate well with Body Mass Index (BMI). Mid upper arm circumference does not change much over the course of a pregnancy.
History & Development
The concept of using mid-upper arm circumference to assess nutritional status dates back to the 1950s. In the 1960s, Dr. David Morley and Dr. Adnam Shakir developed the "Shakir Strip," an early version of the MUAC tape made from repurposed X-ray film. This innovation introduced the color-coded system still in use today.
In the 1970s, Dr. Fred Zerfas refined the design by creating the insertion-style MUAC tape, enhancing ease of use and measurement accuracy. Over the years, organizations like UNICEF have standardized and widely distributed MUAC tapes, making them a staple in global malnutrition screening efforts.
