Solution Overview & Benefits

Every year, around 4 million newborns die within their first month of life, with birth asphyxia—a failure to breathe at birth—responsible for 23% of these deaths. This issue is particularly prevalent in low-income countries, where 50 million women give birth without skilled attendants. Reducing these fatalities requires accessible neonatal resuscitation skills and affordable technologies for both trained and community-level birth workers. Effective neonatal resuscitation equipment is needed by all birth attendants in order to reduce the danger of birth asphyxiation.

Neonatal resuscitator technologies that are affordable and easy to use, clean, and store could increase the use of such lifesaving devices in the developing world. The estimated potential impact of widespread introduction and use of neonatal resuscitators could be about one million neonatal deaths averted annually.

History & Development

PATHS's mission is to advance health equity through innovation and partnerships.

PATH developed an ID adapter in partnership with SID Technologies LLC, advancing it forward from the initial concept stage through the manufacture of clinic-ready devices.

As part of this effort, we modified and tested successive design prototypes, incorporating feedback from health care workers in the United States and India.

The design was transferred to commercial partner West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., which is working with a syringe manufacturer (Helm Medical) on regulatory clearance, manufacturing, and distribution.

Clinical trials and pilot studies have demonstrated safety, efficacy, usability, and health care worker preference for the ID adapter for fIPV, and WHO has purchased a supply of 4 million devices for use by countries interested in introducing fractional dose delivery.
