mothers2mothers

Solution Overview & Benefits
mothers2mothers (m2m) employs women living with HIV as community health workers called Mentor Mothers.
m2m Mentor Mothers work both at health facilities and door-to-door to improve the health of communities across ten African nations. They deliver integrated primary health care services to women, children, adolescents, and entire families.
This Model improves health of communities, while delivering meaningful employment for women living with HIV.
Mentor Mothers are a vital link between health centres and their surrounding communities, connecting, and keeping, people in care. Working hand in hand with doctors, nurses and Mentor Mothers at health centres, Community Mentor Mothers go door-to-door in the catchment areas served by the nearest health centre to deliver services, as well as educate, engage, and follow up with clients who have not received medical care or who have stopped treatment. Mentor Mothers based at nearby health centres can then support clients to access the services they need. Digital tools strengthen the community and health centre connection, ensuring accurate tracking, follow–up, and reporting.
History & Development
mothers2mothers (m2m) was born in 2001 at a time of crisis. The number of new HIV infections in South Africa was at its peak, and a potent cocktail of stigma, fear, and lack of information meant that most HIV-positive pregnant women could not access the treatment required to stay healthy and prevent their unborn children from contracting HIV.
Fast-forward more than 20 years and m2m now operates at hundreds of health centres and communities in ten African nations, and has reached almost 15 million pregnant women, new mothers, and children.
