History & Development
ACRE Africa (formerly known as Kilimo Salama) was designed from a pilot program in the Laikipia district of Kenya, where several hundred maize farmers insured their farm inputs against drought in the long rain season of 2009. Following the drought that season, weather stations showed that there was a payout and all farmers were compensated depending on the extent of the drought as measured at their weather station (a 30 percent and 80 percent payout, respectively). The pilot was the first of its kind in Kenya.
ACRE Africa empowers farmers across Africa to thrive in the face of climate challenges. They design and implement innovative risk mitigation solutions that protect farmers against risks like droughts, floods, and excessive rainfall.
By mitigating these risks, they enable farmers to bounce back from calamities and re-invest in their farms. ACRE Africa’s operations align with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 1: No Poverty,
- SDG 2: Zero Hunger, and
- SDG 13: Climate Action.
