Solution Overview & Benefits

DIG’s programs equip the most marginalized community members, who live far below the poverty line, with skills and resources to grow their own food in sustainable ways, which enhances nutrition, food security and financial resilience, ultimately enabling greater agency and upward mobility.

DIG's human centered design approach to sustainable gardening teaches people to better meet their dietary and economic needs, and because we support their leadership in directing how and what they grow, farmers also harvest a new sense of autonomy and community interdependence.

DIG is unlocking a farmer's ability to break the cycle of hunger so they can harvest a better future.

DIG’s Core Programs:

DIG’s adaptive program prioritizes uniquely marginalized groups who are often left out of other development opportunities, groups like:

  • Elderly Households
  • People living with HIV
  • Conservation Refugees, (such as the Batwa)
  • People Living with Disabilities
  • Chronically Malnourished Children
  • Young Mothers
  • The Ultra Poor
  • and others, there are no barriers to participation.
History & Development

Development In Gardening was started by returned Peace Corps volunteers Steve Bolinger and Sarah Koch during their service in Senegal West Africa. With help from Dr. Salif Sow (along with a small USAID grant), the head doctor of the infectious disease ward at the National Hospital Fann in Dakar, they were able to make a failing garden at the hospital productive. Seeing an increase in the health of patients, Steve and Sarah started DIG to meet an unmet global need.

DIG is currently active in Kenya, Uganda, and Senegal with additional graduated projects in Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Burkina Faso.

DIG’s mission is to improve the nutrition and livelihoods of some of the world’s most uniquely marginalized people by teaching them to plant regenerative gardens that grow health, wealth, and a sense of belonging.
