This is a protective face shield.
The shield is designed to be single use and comprises a foam forehead band and rigid plastic mask.
The face shield design and manufacturing guidance has been published as open source, freely available documentation, such that those in need can manufacture shields themselves. The masks are also available through Shield Net (https://shield-net.org/) who pair manufacturers with organizations in need of medical face shields.
History & Development
On March 16th, the Makerspace were contacted by Wisconsin-Madison University Hospital, to ask if they could make 1000 face shields. After an initial trip to Home Depot and craft stores that night to gather materials, a prototype was produced. Using samples of existing face shields from the hospital and training videos showing how all of the PPE works together, the Makerspace focused on creating a design that could be mass produced quickly, cheaply and be familiar to healthcare professionals. “This product design and specifications are being provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering as a free service to the community during this public health emergency. This product has not been cleared for medical use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The product should only be used during the declared COVID-19 public health emergency if FDA cleared or approved products are unavailable.”
