The primary means of cooking and heating for nearly 3 billion people is biomass fuel and efforts to improve the efficiency of cookstoves have been increasingly popular in the developing world.
- Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) are designed to reduce the fuel consumption and to curb Indoor Air pollution from open fires inside dwellings.
- ICS drastically reduce the indoor air pollution, Save 50-60% fuel than traditional use, ensures faster cooking and also safeguard conservation of the forest resources
- The main components of the stove are built on site by trained technicians.
- Locally available products such as mud, husks, and animal dung are used to construct the main chamber of the stove.
- The most important component, though, is a specially designed chimney that carries smoke out of the house. This reduces indoor air pollution, and which can affect breathing and vision.
- The stove can be purchased for as little at $10 USD. This can be paid in cash for the full price upon purchase, or with a small down payment and a monthly installment plan.
- While the stove poses a health benefit, it is still a wood burning stove. To offset the use of firewood, Grameen Shakti complements the sales of improved cooking stoves with a tree-planting program.

Grameen Shakti has been disseminating Improved Cook Stove all around the country since 2006 to address issue of reducing indoor air pollution and the adverse consequences caused by traditional stoves. So far Grameen Shakti has distributed nearly 1 million ICS which is reducing around 890,000 Ton of CO2 every year.
