ClariWash Self Washing Filration System
WaterReach
Solution Overview & Benefits
A sustainable water purification solution designed to address water-borne diseases in vulnerable communities grappling with contaminated water sources. The ClariWash self-washing filtration system ensures long-term water security by providing cost-effective water purification. Notably, the system operates without a power supply or control system, making it ideal for remote areas or locations facing frequent power interruptions.
The self-washing mechanism, driven hydraulically, eliminates the need for operator intervention, reducing site manning requirements and running costs. This innovation, devoid of moving parts, also obviates the necessity for spare parts.
The ClariWash system, offering centralized water treatment, requires minimal household training or maintenance, thus easing the community's burden. Operational activities are kept low due to the self-washing feature, resulting in very low running costs. Moreover, the system is locally built, avoiding the need for complex technology imports, long procurement processes and consumable supply chains. A single large filter (ClariWash 850) can supply up to 3,000 individuals with 25 litres per person daily. Filters can be clustered for higher outputs, and the low capital cost per head positions ClariWash competitively against other technologies.
The ClariWash Filtration System utilizes a multi barrier approach to water purification. No chemicals are used other than a marginal dose of chlorine. The self washing system, guided by hydraulic principles, ensures periodic cleaning of both the clarifier and filter, enhancing purification efficiency. It can deal with high turbidity without long term fouling.
Especially relevant for disaster response scenarios, the compact and lightweight fibreglass design allows easy transport to remote locations, often without crane access. The self- washing mechanism reduces the need for manpower, crucial in disaster-stricken areas. The absence of control systems, coupled with minimal moving parts, empowers long-term use in off-grid settings.
History & Development
The system has been developed over the last 12 years, from initial proof-of-concept bench tests to a university test rig and to operational deployment at a number of sites. An early improvement saw the introduction of a clarifier upstream of the filter to allow the system to cope with high turbidity raw waters. Thus, most of the suspended load and gross solids are removed by the clarifier improving the capacity of the downstream filter in its purification function. In addition, a coarse GAC pre-filter top media layer has been introduced to prevent filter blinding.
The filter utilizes a high-quality manufactured filter media (AFM) to achieve good water purification.
Currently ClariWash filters have been deployed in Uganda and in the Philippines but is suitable for use worldwide.
